I have chosen Val Garland as one of my inspirations for make up not just the fact that she's had and still is having the most amazing career, but for her undeniable creativity and her ability to be able to think on her feet, she has been known to have used a potato to apply blush! She is a high fashion and celebrity make up artist, born in Bristol.

She has worked with fashion giants such as; Vivienne Westwood & Yves Saint Laurent, even creating her own make up line for YSL! She has worked with models like Kate Moss, Georgia Jagger, and Cara Delevigne, and stars of music and film such as Scarlett Johansson and Lady Gaga!

She is fearless and if she doesn't like something or has a vision she isn't afraid to change it; 'For British designer Mary Katrantzou's first runway show, Garland changed the look the day of the show. "I just felt what we had done wasn't working, so I went around with each makeup artist on my team and created an individualized eyeliner look for each model," Garland recalled. Her amazing use of colour and texture is what inspires me the most, her work is so versatile, its rare you see the same thing twice, my favourite look done by her is:

This is my ultimate favourite image by Val Garland for a few reasons;

- The skin is flawless, we are constantly being told that the base and the continuity of the base to the neck and hands is vital, I think this image is a perfect example of nailing that. The models skin literally look like silk.

- The lip colour orange coral is my favourite colour anyway, and it works so so well with this look, especially the shine to the lips, which links in the wet look hair, the dewy skin, the highly manicured nails and obviously the star of the picture... The eyes!

- The eyes are just unreal! The mix of metallics, (it really reminds me of the metallic glue pens I used to have as a child), the way its been made to look drizzled on, it has a melting effect, I love the fact the brows have been completely covered up and recreated with this product. The gold base brings everything together really well. I really really love the look. The lashes look amazing especially with the metallic black shadow which has also been used to create a winged liner.


Val Garland has been a major influence in the industry, she is the go to make up artist for MAC, she has worked on so many runway shows with her looks, becoming major influences to the next season of make up trends. She's not afraid to take risks and she dares to go where others don't which is why I'm sure she was the go to make up artist for the amazing Alexander Mcqueen and many of his catwalk shows, and why Lady Gaga personally picked her for more than one of her music videos. She shocks and delivers every time she picks up a make up brush....or a potato!
