Heavy contouring at home

So in class our teacher Branka gave us a tutorial in light and heavy contouring, and due to the class only being so long she gave us the heavy contouring as homework, so here is a run through of what techniques and products she used to create the heavy look, then I will put photos up of what I did and how I found it etc..
Branka's heavy contouring:

  • So if you see my earlier post on light contouring Branka used a La Maquillage Mandy gold palette, but this time instead of using as a concealer then going over the top with foundation and makeup mixer, just use it as the entire base, it you come across greyer areas, once again add D32 from Kryolan derma palette and go over with base to neutralise.
  • Use the Kryolan Derma palette to mix highlight and contour. This time highlight not only "C" section, along cheekbone and up to forehead but also below brow line, down nose, chin, and top lip. Branka used colours D8, D11, D15.

  • Then contour temples, cheekbone, down either side of highlight on nose and along jawline. Branka used colours D3, D7, and a little D1.
  • If you need to soften anywhere just go over with a little foundation.
  • Use MAC Vanilla pigment to highlight the cheeks, brows and forehead.
  • Groom brows and fill in using derma palette, then brush through again.
  • Mix a blush using Kryolan lip palette, and use the same on lips.

I personally am not a fan of wearing heavy contour as an everyday thing. I actually think it looks quite scary in person, but I can see why it would be good for a photo-shoot or in TV, film and theatre.
So I roped my 15 year old sister Daisy to let me experiment on her face!!
Skin prepped and bare
So I cleansed, toned and moisturised her face, and started to mix her colour, she is quite fair, she has quite an oil based skin so I don't think the La Maquillage palette is necessarily the best for her skin, as it's quite heavy and oily but you gotta work with what you've got! So I stuck to the lighter colours and used a darker beige added in from the derma palette (actual colour numbers to come soon!)
Starting to add in the contour around the highlight
with just the base on and highlight on nose

So I was pretty happy with the coverage I got but maybe it could of been a slightly darker tone. Also I should have gone lighter with the highlight but couldn't get it any lighter as my base was already mixed using the lightest colours in my palettes so really couldn't get it much lighter I'm definitely going to invest in some white MAC face and body paint and some highlighters! Any excuse to buy new make-up is good for me!

I was really happy with the eyebrow, which was more challenging than it was in class due to the fact my sister hasn't started grooming hers yet, therefore there's no definitive shape so I had to create one without plucking as she didn't want me to, so I actually had to cover up part of the brow!

So I thought I would do my sisters hair too so put in a one piece hair extension, I honestly think she has transformed, she looks a lot older than 15. In the flesh the make-up was very strong and 'in your face' but when photographing it is really effective. I think by filling in her brows so much it really has shaped her face and opened up her eyes.

I also think that her lips look a lot fuller with lipstick applied despite not having liner on them.

I think you can really see the contouring here around the nose, cheekbone and jawline, her face looks a lot more chiselled than usual.

Lesson Evaluation:

Overall I'm happy with the colour match I went with, I am getting a lot more confident with it now, but as I said earlier I do really think that I could have done with a lighter colour for highlighting to make it more effective, and maybe could've gone darker with the contour.

I'm happy with the lip and blush colour with her skin tone. Also I think with the hair in she looks so different I think she has lovely hair as it is but with this sort of make-up I feel it really completes the look!

For my first time contouring and without the reassuring presence of my teacher Branka in the room I'm quite pleased with the final outcome. I'm sure there'll be plenty more contouring to come once I've treated myself to some new additions to my make-up kit!

Natural look contouring

14.10.14, Natural look contouring, Tutor: Branka

So today in class we were shown 2 types of contouring the first a lighter version aim being to have a lovely sheer, dewy, glossy face at the end, which Branka told us would be great for a photo-shoot but is not that durable, and the second a heavier, which Branka told us is good for when the client may be on the red carpet or where there's a lot of flashing lights.

Branka's guide to a light contoured face:

  • Prep your models face, cleanse, tone & moisturise
  • Branka used Le Maquillage Mandy Gold palette, to mix the models skin tone, using quite a large eye brush, work into the areas of the skin that need neutralising, such as blemishes or red areas,
  • If it starts to look a little grey apply the colour D32 from the Kryolan derma palette, then go back over with the base to neutralise.
  • Mix 1/4 foundation to 3/4 makeup mixer and it becomes a like a tinted moisturiser. Branka used MAC Studio Fix Fluid. Apply over the face using the tip of the brush (large eye brush) for a really good natural coverage. Don't be afraid to go over areas that need extra coverage with your original base.
  • Set around the eyes and nose using a neutral translucent powder.
  • Next use Screenface illuminator to highlight, you only need a small amount. Apply with your finger to warm the product. Create a 'C' shape from cheekbone around and up to forehead. Set with the translucent powder.
  • Branka used the Ben Nye Colour Palette, colours; beige, brown, and grey mixed together for contour colour. Use angle brush to apply. Work the line underneath highlighter from ear to mouth. Use brush used for applying base to blend. Set with translucent powder.
  • Brush through the brows using a brow brush. Then use Kryolan derma palette to fill in. Brush through again.
  • Use MAC Vanilla pigment, dab using fingers, over the top of the apple of the cheek and under the brow.
  • Finish with blusher using Kryolan lip palette, mix or use a colour that best suits your models tone.
  • Match blush colour to lips.

1. Branka's work, right side natural contour

2 Branka's left side heavier contour
3 Brankas heavier contour
It was amazing to watch Branka do these 2 different looks, I've always associated contouring with being really heavy and quite theatrical i.e. Kim Kardashian, so I found it really interesting to see it in a more natural form, and it looked really good, I may have to introduce it more into my own routine!

So we had to go away, get into pairs and do the lighter version on one another, then for our homework we have to fill in a colour chart sheet and do the heavy contouring either on ourselves or each other, and put it all on our blogs but that is for another time!

4. My model before, very lucky as she has really lovely skin to work with!

Overview & evaluation of lesson:
Above is a picture of my model bare faced. She has really fantastic skin so it was really lovely to work on, the only thing was she was wearing false eyelashes so the end result wont be as natural as possible!

I found mixing her tone using a mix of my La Maquillage palette and the Kryolan derma palette, the easiest I have yet as her neck tone was quite similar to the colours in the palette already so it didn't take much tweaking. So I was happy with the overall coverage.

The highlight went on ok, the contour I found the hardest as it such a dark colour that if you do make a mistake it super hard to get rid of!

I found that when I did go a bit overboard with the Ben Nye palette, just lightly brushing over with the brush used to apply foundation softens it and makes it less visible. However, I did get there in the end.

I also found filling in the eyebrows a challenge to get them symmetrical and thicken them to give a more natural appearance I think that the colour I went for could have been slightly darker to match my models hair colour. I feel they look a little too light.

I was really happy with the end result, but feel my photos I took aren't in the best light to show what I done. As they say "they look much better in person!"

After she was wearing false eyelashes so doesn't look as natural as possible!

Left side view
I'm really happy with how the highlight looks around the eye, and the dewiness of the foundation, I think I could have applied more colour onto the lips as it looks as if there's nothing on them!
Right side view
Overall I really enjoyed the class and am definitely excited to use the techniques I learnt in the future. Next up is my heavy contouring!

SS15 New York & London

So for our homework we have to research 2 looks, one from New York SS15 fashion week, and one from London SS15 fashion week. First up New York;

Vera Wang:
I absolutely loved this collection, it was really beautiful and luxurious, and I felt everything had an almost enchanting and magical edge to it, from the stunning backdrop of black roses, to the flow and movement of the garments, then the hair and make-up worked so well to complete the look.

Make-up:
The main focus was on the eyes, obviously the bold smoky lilac that Vera Wang went for would have worked pretty well on its own for keeping the eyes a the main point of focus, but by keeping the rest of the face to a bare minimum it really did compliment them even more.

Lucia Pieroni did the make-up using Cle De Peau a Japanese make-up brand. She applied a plum shade from their Moon Beam Eye Colour, on the middle of the top and bottom eyelids then blended it up and out, leaving no hard lines, which I really like as I think it gives a feminine edge to quite a monochromatic collection, which has this certain masculinity about it, it creates a really good balance.

There was a small amount of mascara applied to the roots of the bottom lashes, I think it works really well, because the lilac was so gorgeous that if a heavy mascara or eye-liner had been applied it would have removed your attention from the lids and that would have been a shame!

One the face Lucia Pieroni used Cle De Peau Beaute Radiant Powder Foundation, and layered Luminizing Face Enhancer, onto the cheekbones, forehead and nose, she then applied their 210 lipstick (nude) to the lips. I think the combination of the foundation chosen and the Luminizing face powder was amazing, as the foundation itself was very natural in appearance but also matt which I think is really important in this look, because when the Luminizing Face Enhancer is used over the top it really stands out and brings the face to life in a lovely natural way, it's not over the top, just gives off a glow and shine when the light hits it.

Nails:
Were Jin Soon Choi's own polish in Tulle colour, they were also very natural and classic with the top gloss used giving off a nice shine.

Hair:
The hair I love love loved! Paul Hanlon created the look, it was quite messy waves, with 2 plaits either side of the nape of the neck they started off as fishtail braid ending with a basic 3 strand plait, they were almost hidden beneath the hair, it definitely had a bohemian festival sort of vibe but I think it really worked.
Paul Hanlon created the hair by applying OSiS+ Grip Extreme Hold Mousse to damp hair, dry using a brush, keeping the roots flat to the head, once hair dried he took large sections and curled to create waves using a curling tong, he then used BC Oil Potion Finishing Treatment to smooth hair. He then took a small section of hair at the nape of the neck, directly under the ear, and fishtailed halfway, ending with a 3 strand plait, he made sure the braids weren't too clean and ruffled them up a bit to get the shabby chic vibe. He then used OSiS+ Session Label Silk Shine Cream to add texture and shine to the hair, and lastly he finished off with OSiS+ Session Label Flexible Hold Hairspray, for a long lasting hold.

Everything together as a whole looked amazing and was really mesmerizing especially with the music they walked to as well which was mixed by Frederic Sanchez and was rather hypnotic.
Vera was inspired by 1700 era France, which you can see in fabric techniques there's alot of layers, pleating, rouching, and embroidery.

Overall I thought the look was amazing, it really had an impact after watching it, you definitely wouldn't forget it! The only thing I would change is applying a light gloss over the lip, I just feel it would complete  the face and keep with the clean look, I feel it would also link in really well with the shine from Cle De Peau Luminizing Face Enhancer, the tulle nails and also the swarovski crystals that we saw!

To view part of the show click here, let me know your opinions or if you've tried and tested the products used or maybe recreated the look yourself, would be great to hear any thoughts!

London Fashion week SS15 Erdem

I have chosen Erdem to write about as I really loved the final look it was so organic, and natural. The pureness brought a real honesty to it. All the models had their hair pulled back into braids, and very natural make-up with a pinched cheek effect. The collection itself featured lots of prints, feathers, silk and lace and alot of green, cream and brown colours, it channels nature. Think rainforest.

The collection flows really beautifully and the garments are very feminine and have great movement. Some of the models wore gladiator sandals, so feet were exposed which added to the natural theme.

Make-up:
Val Garland was the woman behind the face, she created a wonderful fresh dewy face, with lovely fresh flushed cheeks, it almost looks as if the models permanently live outdoors and they've all just emerged, out of the forest.

Val used NARS Stick Concealer, Radiant Creamy Concealer, Loose Powder, along with Siam Matt Multiple, Exumas Matt Multiple, and Copacabana Multiple in Rose and Apricot tones, the Copacabana was also used on the eyes, she also used Bouthan Duo Eye shadow, & Luxor Multiple. Siam Matt Multiple, and Luxor Multiple were used on the lips to give a bit of a shine.

Nails:
They were done by Jenny Draper, they were painted in an unmanicured way to give the impression that the girls had painted their own nails.

Hair:
Anthony Turner did the hair in one clean long braid, which went over the ears, in an almost Victorian manner, matched with a middle parting, the only product used was L'Oreal Professional Mythic Oil to add a rich shine to the hair.

I really like the combination of everything and I feel it was the right decision to leave the eyes understated as I think that if the eyes were made up it would look too busy with the cheeks as well & would also have taken away from the natural look being portrayed. I definitely wouldn't have changed anything the look they created fitted the brief perfectly. Although I do feel that one of the first looks Anthony Turner presented to Erdem; which was a messier version of the braid would have also worked really well and if anything would have looked more organic, in terms of the humidity in the rainforest and the general elements of the outdoors, and how they would effect the hair.

Practising at home

So after my first class (see first post) I went over to my families house to use them as guinea pigs, after a long day at work/school for them they were obviously absolutely thrilled!! So I decided to challenge myself a little by doing the bare face make-up technique on my younger sister as she has recently had a few breakouts on her forehead, so I thought it would be more challenging as I find it easier to cover up blemishes using a heavier application!
I started off by toning, cleansing and moisturising her skin using the brand Simple. Once I was happy that it clean, I got my derma palette and mixed up her skin tone, she has a very fair tone, with yellow undertones. Once I matched I used a sponge to work it onto her face
My lovely little sister Ellie- a bare faced beauty!

Hitting her teenage years she's had a slight breakout across her forehead
Once I was happy that it clean, I got my derma palette and mixed up her skin tone, she has a very fair tone, with yellow undertones. Once I matched I used a sponge to work it onto her face making sure I was gently using a 'stippling' technique so I didn't get any sponge marks. I then decided to use MAC studio fix fluid mixed with a little moisturiser to thin it out a little and get a more natural result. So starting from the centre of the face, I worked outwards until I was happy with the overall application. I fixed it with neutral translucent powder. For the blush I used the kryolan lip palette I wanted to get a peachy colour this time with more pink, I applied it extremely lightly and worked it into the cheek so it looked as natural as possible. I used the blush colour on her lip as well.
After with a 'no make-up look'

Coverage of breakouts
Overall I felt happy with the coverage of blemishes and the skin tone match. Looking back on the finished pictures I'm really not happy with the blush tone, I feel it washes her out, I think a bit more of a pink tone in there would really work as well as on her lips.
My wonderful step mum 'au natural'

After with a heavy make-up application
Overview & evaluation:

So next up was my step mum Wendy, she rarely wears make-up so I thought it would be a challenge for me to do a heavy application on her without making her look ridiculous! As you can see from my 'before' picture, she has really healthy skin.

Due to her lack of make-up I feel her eyes are quite drooped so I wanted to open them up a bit. So once again I cleansed, toned & moisturised my models face.

Then I used my derma palette to mix up a concealer for her, her skin is a darker shade due to it's exposure to the sun as she rarely wears concealer or foundation, so I mixed up a darker tone.

I worked it around the nose, mouth and the red parts on her cheeks and chin.

I added a lighter tone around and under her eyes to open then up a bit more.

I then used MAC studio fix fluid foundation again but didn't mix with moisturiser this time as a wanted a thicker application, instead I mixed in the left over concealer into it.

I really worked it on my hand before applying to her face to thicken it up.

At first I only applied a light coverage, then worked more over the areas that needed it more, which were the forehead and cheeks. Once I was happy that I had sufficient coverage, and that it was all blended well, I fixed it with the neutral translucent powder.

For the blush I thought an apricot colour like the one I mixed on class for my model would look good but with a bit more pink. I went with that decision, and used the same colour on her lips.

Looking back I think a darker reddy, purple colour (like a rouge) would've been better for the lips and maybe instead of adding a pink into the apricot colour, adding the darker colour that I wanted for the lips into it, I think it would have made better definition on her face and brought out the foundation I went with alot better.

I am glad I practised though, as I really want to get comfortable with mixing and colour matching, as I get so nervous at the moment and keep doubting myself and everything I do, but even going and doing 2 more faces has made me that little bit more confident!

Next time I do make-up on them I will make the changes I feel I should have done last time, and see how it looks... that's if they let me near them again!!

Day 1- heavy weight Vs light weight 7.10.14

Make-up lesson 1,'No make-up, make-up' vs heavy weight, 07/10/14, Tutor, Branka

Health & Safety:
As it was our first lesson we were taken over health and safety of being in the classroom but also in the workplace.

  • Coats hung up
  • All cases/bags under worktop
  • Make sure all kit is clean & hygienic
  • Place couch roll or black towel down on bench
  • Set out kit neatly and efficiently so its organised, include mints, anti-bacterial hand gel, Vaseline, cotton buds, wipes, tissues, mints & skin prep.
  • Its really important to take pride in your set up as it reflects on you, and if your really unorganised or unhygienic you wont get booked again or could get a bad reputation.
  • Always have a spray bottle of IPA & water to hand (that is clearly labelled!)
  • Have a pot to place rubbish in so it doesn't cross contaminate with your brushes/make-up.
  • Have spare mascara applicators
  • Powder puff

What you'll need:

  • Cleanser/toner/moisturiser
  • Cotton wool/buds
  • Pot for rubbish
  • concealer brush
  • Foundation brush
  • Spatula & palette or instead of palette use the back of your hand
  • Kryolan derma palette
  • MAC face & body foundation
  • MAC studio fix fluid foundation
  • Translucent powder

Step-by-step guide:

So for our first make-up lesson we got a demonstration from Branka our teacher, she showed us 2 different make-up techniques on either side of the face; one heavy make-up and the other light. It was really interesting to watch and overall the lighter coverage looked alot better (in my opinion!)

  • So Branka told us for her natural look that she always applies concealer first,
  • she used Kryolan derma palette, to achieve the perfect match for models face, (Natasha our classmate) Branka told us that its really important when checking your models skin tone don't just match up to their face, but also to their neck & arms. Branka didn't need to apply much concealer as Natasha has good skin!
  • She then used MAC face and body with a little of the concealer and gave a very light coverage over the face, using a foundation brush.
  • She then set it with neutral loose powder.
  • She then moved onto the blusher and used a Kryolan lip palette! She mixed colours together and it gave such a lovely dewy natural finish!

For the heavy make-up look:

  • Branka used the derma palette again but used more
  • Then went over with MAC studio fix fluid this time it was a much heavier application.
  • Set it once again with neutral translucent powder.
  • She used the lipstick as a blusher again but a heavier amount was applied!

Branka's heavy base application on the right

Branka's light application on the left and heavy on the right.
We then got ourselves into pairs and had to have a go at both looks on each other.

I was quite nervous about getting a match

mixing the concealer and foundation so just went with my gut, I didn't get it straight away but realised my models skin had yellow undertones so once I added a yellow colour it was a match (phew!)

I found the heavier coverage alot easier to do as you are literally covering up everything, whereas with the lighter coverage I found it much more difficult to get the desired 'no make-up' look without giving into the urge of applying more make-up!

I got there in the end though! I was really happy with the blush I made for my model I went with an apricot tone as it really complimented her skin tone and gave her a lovely glow.

My lovely model Maisie rocking her bare face!

Overview & evaluation of lesson:

Overall I feel as a novice that I did complete the two sides quite well although I think I could have gone a shade lighter, it took me quite a while to mix the right tones for my model, so I definitely think I could benefit from practising outside of class on friends and family to get used to different skin tones and types, it would also help me speed up which is definitely something I need to work on as our practical assessment will only be an hour long to both hair and make-up....eeeek!!

My model was conscious that she had a few spots and doesn't like her skin without make-up as it's too red- her quote not mine!

So I did my best to cover it up and looking at the end result I think it looks as clear as a daisy, although I think that's more to do with an exaggeration on her part, rather than my skills!!

The thing I'm most happy about is the blusher, I really think its a good match for my model. I really enjoyed my first class and really getting to know the products and how they work. Bring on the next class!!
