POP Magazine

1. POP magazine is a relatively new magazine; 'co-founded in 2000 by Ashley Heath and Katie Grand. The initial creative directors for the magazine were Lee Swillingham and Stuart Spalding. They left in 2008 along with Katie Grand to establish rival magazine LOVE. 

Pop has now relaunched in an online digital format as THEPOP.COM. The first issue under new management was released on 1 September 2009. Dasha Zhukova was hired as editor-in-chief with Ashley Heath as the Editorial Director and David Girhammar as an editor
It is produced bi-annually.' (Wikipedia, 2015).

The reason I like POP magazine is the combination of fashion and art on its pages. They never have a plain photo there's always another element which is something that sets it aside from other magazines.
 I would say its aimed at 20-30 year olds, as it quite funky and out there.

2. Kate Moss on the cover of POP Autumn 2006 issue. I love the styling in this cover, there's the angelic wings teamed with the dark heavy eyes, portraying heaven and hell, along with Kate being topless, but covering her modesty  with her arms as she is praying, once again depicting heaven and hell, it's very cleverly done. I love the bleached brows combined with the gold and jewels.  

3. Britney Spears collaborated with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami on this cover. It's so authentically Japanese and cheesy, and I think the look works really well on her. It's typical manga sort of make-up, pale skin, along with doll like features, with emphasis on the eyes.

4. Sienna miller features on this cover, I lovee the make-up on this cover, the blocked out eyebrows are done so well and I love the new design, its so weird but somehow really suits her, the straight eyeliner also ties in really well. The way she has her hands on the sides of her face looks as though she's stretching her face back adding even more emphasis on the dramatic make-up. The red lips set the whole look off even more I think it needed that pop of colour, and they have cleverly made the font on the cover the same colour.

Harpers Bazaar

I have chosen to talk about Harpers Bazaar magazine, as it's one of the longest running magazines; first launched in America in 1867.

Aimed at members of the upper-middle and upper classes, Bazaar assembles photographers, artists, designers and writers to deliver a "sophisticated" perspective into the world of fashion, beauty and popular culture on a monthly basis.

Carmel Snow, Diana Vreeland, & Nonnie Moore are just a few of the women who have been editor in chief of the magazine and really churned and moulded it into what is is today, one of the worlds leading fashion and lifestyle magazines.

2. March 1943 cover featuring a teenage Lauren Bacall, famous actress and model during the 40's up till the 90's!

Harpers Bazaar arrived in the UK in 1929, and is now published in 31 countries!

 The magazine has won several awards, including Consumer Magazine of the Year. The current editor-in-chief is Justine Picardie. Previous editors of the UK editors are Lucy Yeomans and Jennifer Dickinson.

The main reason I like the magazine is the breakthrough they had in fashion through photography, when Carmel Snow was editor in 1933 she employed photojournalist Martin Munkacsi to photograph a swimwear spread for the magazine. As the model ran toward the camera, Munkacsi took the picture that made fashion-magazine history. Until that moment, nearly all fashion was carefully staged on mannequin-like models in a studio 3. (Wikipedia, 2015). They made the breakthrough in more natural and free photographs, which I think has been a massive factor in the fashion industry inspiring the likes of Richard Avedon and David Bailey.

Some of my favourite covers from the magazine are:

4. 1956 cover shot by Richard Avedon. I really love this cover because its quite weird in the sense that the model has no body, also that her hair is covered by a scarf and an oversized hat, yet it is still striking! The models eyes are heavily linered, as well as her brows which draws you in. Her base is perfectly mimicked by the pale pinks in the floral scarf accessory, which I love. It really just jumped out at me when I first saw it which is exactly what a cover shot should do!

5. The first ever non Caucasian model to appear on the cover of Harpers Bazaar, photographed by Richard Avedon. The reason I love this cover is how its so clever for the time, there wasn't the technologies we have today available so to create this image, is an example of how talented Richard Avedon was. The hair is so beautiful in it as well, the classic beehive paired with the flawless classic make up look works so well.

6. Kate Moss features on this cover, I love the freedom in the picture, to me her body language is saying 'who cares?' 'I'm free!' which really drew me in! I also really like the styling of the hair, the way is looks as if it's been swept back by the wind. The make up is very simple and stunning with a pastel blue on the eye lids to tie in with the dress.

7. This is one of my all time favourite magazine covers not just from Harpers, but in general. It was shot by Richard Avedon and features Jean Shrimpton on the cover. It was shot in 1965, and completely captures the 60's; wacky, colourful, doe eyes, the sultry pout, pastel lips, heavy mascara, and the groomed dark brows. I love the face shes wearing a space helmet, it may be strange but it really works! I love her stance and the way shes staring down the lense, and obviously I can't not comment on her eyes! They are amazing. I feel I don't need to say anything further!

LOVE Magazine

I have chosen to research LOVE magazine as I really like the diversity of it, and how the logo always changes, depending on the mood and theme of the particular issue.

1. Issue 8, Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith in Downton Abbey) features on the cover, the editorial was titled; 'Dance With A Stranger' and dedicated to the famous English costume drama Downton Abbey. It also featured other cast members 2.(FASHION SLOP, 2012) I love the way it's taken elements from period costumes featured in the TV series, and made them into high fashion, avant garde shots. 

Also how it doesn't stick to the normal 'stick thin' 'aesthetically beautiful' people, they go against the so called rules of fashion, and I just LOVE it....do you like what I did there?! 

I also love how they have more than one front cover following the same theme, such as issue 3 which featured a number of different supermodels, these included Naomi Campbell, Jeneil Williams,and Lara Stone, they appeared wearing nothing, the only thing covering their modesty was tape that had been added after the shot using an editing program.


For example it's first ever copy featured Beth Ditto lead singer from the band The Gossip, naked, on the front cover, something the likes of Vogue would never do.

For their 5th anniversary, Minnie Mouse was on the front cover..weird but wonderful;

It was founded in 2009 by stylist and fashion journalist fashion journalist Katie Grand, who remains Editor-in-chief to this day 5.(Wikipedia, 2015).

The magazine itself is produced bi annually. 

I love the front covers they are so varied, sometimes they are really real, raw and stripped back, then other times they can be quite theatrical and artistic, and sometimes they are shocking, provocative, causing controversy. Which is why it stands out so much for me, the covers always draw me in.

7. Cover photo featuring Kate Moss and transgender model Lea T in a passionate embrace, in their androgyny chic issue, made headlines; I think you can see why for yourself. The photo was "shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott" 8.(Mail Online, 2011), and sure enough it got alot of attention.

 I also like their articles, I feel that this magazine is aimed at ages 18-30; some of the celebrities featured on their covers such as Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus I feel attract the younger audience.


Also all their backstage coverage of fashion shows/shoots appeal to both the younger reader all the way to the readers aged 30, as not only is is pretty cool to see backstage photos, and read about how the shoot has been thought of, conducted and shot, they also supply great reference source for students and people working in the creative industry, along with also providing great inspiration, as they're covers can often be extremely creative, and 'out there'.

9. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley looks like Jessica Rabbit in this photo. The makeup is utterly flawless. The orange hair looks amazing on her, paired with the full glossy deep red lips, the winged liner, just everything makes it ones of my all time favourite covers not just from LOVE but across the board!

10. The black and white shot was taken by Sølve Sundsbø for the magazine's 'Clean' issue 11.(Mail Online, 2013), with Cara Delevingne as the cover girl. I'ts such a timeless, classic style, black and white photography will never become a 'last year' style. The make up is simple but well executed and by the hair being up of the face it shows it off even more.

12. The sixth issue sees Zimbabwean-born model Nyasha Matonhodze appear styled with a black crow head wear and black tears for their 'Strangely Romantic Super Natural' theme 13.(Mdudu, 2015). 

14.  The 13-year-old actress, Elle Fanning posed for photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

She was one of three models to grace the cover of Love‘s Issue 6, in 2011, 15.(Just Jared, 2015). I love the styling here, it has an innocence to it, which is probably due to her age. It almost has a Victorian feel to it, with the vintage lace and ribbon in the hair.The make up is minimal and clean sticking to the theme. 

16. Model Saskia De Brauw features on this cover. I love the abstract messy approach to the make-up paired with the slick neat hair it creates a really good contrast, I also feel the way the piecer of material looks as if the model is holding it around her own shoulders, adds vulnerability to the image; as if she has been caught in a big paint fight and is recovering.  

17. Gisele Bunchden features on this cover. I adore this cover, the make-up is so well executed, in particular the contouring that at first glance you don't notice that the brows have been bleached, and it works so well! The large false lashes, compensate for the lack of brows too. The hair is fabulous its so voluminous and the golden highlight running through the front ties the whole, gold and tan look together perfectly.

18. Kendall Jenner features on this cover. What I love about this cover is how raw and stripped back it is. For me it’s quite animalistic; the fur hood/hat, being the only thing that Kendall has on, and her eyes the only thing that have been made up, screams wolf to me, the way her hair is a little damp, and some strands are stuck to her face, gives the impression that she's in or been in the elements, joint with the way her eyes pierce through the fur, just says wolf to me and I think it’s done very well.

19. Malgosia Bela features on issue 8's cover. I love this cover so much, the silver leaf is such a good idea when recreating the skull, it's cracked texture works so well, and the black shading really sets it off! and makes the nose and eye areas look so hollow! I think the dark green shading has been projected onto the models face as you can see the make-up beneath perfectly, and its continues onto the background behind the model. I also love the red lip, it adds a great pop of colour and brings a high fashion element to the look.

20. Kim Kardashian features on the next cover of LOVE magazine. I think what they have done is really clever as it will draw a lot of attention to the magazine as it's a version of Kim K that we have never seen, stripped back, natural wet look hair, bleached brows, it's very minimal, especially for the Queen of the contour! So I'm looking forward to buying it!
