Evaluation

Wow what an amazing 2 years, it’s been the hardest and most stressful time of my life but also the most rewarding. It’s amazing to look back through pictures of my work and see the progress I’ve made without really realising. From a Gibson girl to a London bombings victim to Marilyn Monroe, I feel as if I’ve covered so many different styles and genres! Some yes I could do better if I did them now but overall I’m really proud of all I have accomplished over the two year period!

My favourite lesson has got to be period hair with Sam, when I first joined the course I was adamant that I wanted to do special effects and now after finishing the two years with the amazing teaching from Sam I have fallen head over heels for hair (not knotting though!). I love everything about it all the ways in which you can manipulate it, all the techniques both modern and old fashion, and of course all the styles over the years. I feel I have a natural flare and love for it which makes it not feel like work for me, I become really relaxed as I do it.  I have surprisingly enough despite the never ending logbooks enjoyed period hair and makeup the most and hope to be able to practice it in the industry!

Fashion in first year was amazing also, that really helped me with achieving different bases for different skin types, and also knowledge of the colour spectrum was great in this lesson, which is a must to learn, and its one of those things that once you know you can never forget. I really enjoyed the freedom and creativity of the fashion classes; I would say they really helped me in gaining more self confidence when it comes to free styling which is something I definitely needed!

Theatre and special effects were both incredible, being able to learn and design character makeup is something I’ll never forget, the lessons were also so much fun, like who doesn't want to make themselves look 80 years old one day and look like their dying the next?! These particular lessons were the ones that helped me so much in gaining vast product knowledge as well as insider tips and tricks that you would never think of! I thoroughly enjoyed creating burns in particular, the shock factor of people thinking they’re real is great!

Even theory lessons I enjoyed which I thought I would hate I found so interesting, I think Fiona has an exceptional way of teaching that really draws you in and makes you want to know more. I could tell you all there is to know about the Victorians and its all down to her!

The class I struggled with the most was body painting, I don’t have a natural flare for it so found it really difficult to do, although saying that I thoroughly enjoyed the group project and working as a team to produce a final design!

The thing I found hardest was time management when it came to theory work as I work full time and my days off were at university so there were many sleepless nights, I think if I could give anyone advice doing the course it would be to not work full time hours if they don’t have to and to write up the lesson and its evaluation after each class, it makes it far easier when going to do a log book, as often when it comes to writing out your step by steps and lesson evaluations you can’t remember exactly how you were feeling or what you thought you could’ve have improved on at the time.

As for our final project I thought it went amazingly for everyone the final show was incredible! For myself personally I found find a reliable model (emphasis on reliable) very stressful, I had 3 models cancel on me before the shoot so had to use a classmate! As my brief for a model was very specific (I had to have a ballet dancer) it was a lot harder! I had to sacrifice doing a ballet inspired photo shoot as my classmate had to stand in which was a shame so I decided to make my photo shoot more editorial so made a swan out of the hair used my handmade hair headdress and applied a striking, clean, makeup. I decided to focus more on the actual ballet for the show!

So show day arrived very quickly! I managed to get a beautiful model/dancer who has been practising Ballet among other styles since she was 2! We went through timings and choreography that was appropriate for the show. Changes I made from the shoot in terms of the makeup and hair were I didn’t do the swan in the hair as it wasn’t stable enough to maintain its form with the dancing. So I did a slicked back up do with a beehivesque feel to it, I then dressed the bun with black feathers and a grey feather hair accessory at the back, so the swan theme was still very much part of the look. I kept the face makeup the same as it was so striking and I thought it brought the theme and music choice together perfectly! I put my model in a black sheer, high neck leotard and customised the cuffs of the sleeves with black feathers to tie in with the hair. The skirt remained the same but had to be trimmed as this model was a lot shorter than my original model I had planned on using and whom the skirt was made to fit. The disappointing thing was that I couldn’t use my headdress as it was made for my original model that was blonde, whereas Claudia is a brunette!

Overall I am extremely happy and proud of myself and all my achievements over the two year period at West Thames College. All the lessons and lecturers have more than prepared me to put myself out there and become a full time working makeup artist, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Final Show: How things changed from the photo shoot:

As I didn't want to risk the swan falling out of the hair during the dance I decided to create an up do that was secure and stream lined and just added in feathers to keep the swan theme going. I also purchased a sheer leotard which I customised by sewing on black feathers to the cuffs. Overall I was so pleased with the outcome and the performance! Here is a the song my model performed to:

Overall I am so proud of myself and what I achieved for this final project it was everything I had planned and more! I will treasure my time spent at West Thames forever.

Makeup design & photographic shoot

So taking inspiration from the fashion research I collated I came up with this design:

So the day of the photographic shoot is here! I arrived half and hour early to set up and followed all health and safety regulations. To create the makeup I used Boujous foundation as a base and my Mkeup forever foundation palette to contour, as well as bronzer. My Makeup Forever flash palette to create the eye makeup. I used MAC vanilla pigment to highlight and MAC cherry lip liner topped with ruby woo matt lipstick from MAC followed by a small amount of lip gloss to coat. I used MAC face & body foundation on the skin so it looked glowing on camera.
As I was expecting a long haired blonde model initially, my hair design was based on this so I used clip in extensions to create a pony tail on my classmate, this gave me enough length to play with, I then used her own hair to blend the two together.

Shots from the shoot:

Overall I was really happy with how the shoot turned out despite having to improvise after being let down by various models! Now I just have to find a model for the final show!!

Making the costume!

I went to fabric land in Kingston and bought black tuille, black chiffon and black lace as well as other bits and bobs I'd need such as elastic and ribbon. All in all it came to £58 which is a lot but I did buy 6 metres of everything just to be safe!
I wanted to create a midi length ballet skirt, and it was really important to me that the movement of the skirt flowed and wasn't restricted so it was visually pleasing when it comes to the show.
I used these youtube videos for creating a circle skirt to make mine:

I repeated this method 3 times with each fabric, I then pinned the waist sections together, I decided to remove the tuille layer as it made it look too bulky which is not what I wanted, after I did this it looked far better! I then created an elasticated waistband, I then sewed black ribbon onto the ends of the elastic so I could tie in a bow.

Overall I was happy with the outcome but I may have to trim the length depending on the height of my model.

My final Design (s)!

My first design:

Initially I was going to body paint on the leotard but then 3 models cancelled on me for the show and the shoot so luckily a classmate stepped in but she wasn't comfortable with being nude so I had her wear crop top.

Initial hair and makeup design.

I decided to make a head piece so I would have more hair to work with to create the swan,so I created wings out of cardboard and false hair;

I bought 2 of the same cardboard masks from Cass Art and as they were asymmetric I had to cut off a part of one and stick it onto the other to create a symmetrical mask. I bought some fake hair used for weave techniques it was only £1.99 so a bargain! I took thin strands of it then twisted and looped, trimmed then stuck onto my mask. It was an extremely long process it took about 3 days to complete! I then cut out the mask section so it only became a headdress, as I want to create a makeup design, therefore not wanting the face to be hidden!

In depth research for my final idea

I have decided to combine natural world, and literary subjects. So I want my final piece to something that everyone will remember so want to make it a performance, and what better way to do that then dance?! In particular ballet!
I looked at different ballets such as the nutcracker, Giselle, Swan Lake and a Midsummers Nights Dream. The one that particularly stuck out for me was Swan Lake its such a beautiful, haunting story. I remember watching the film Billy Elliott for the first time, then seeing it in the West End and it was just amazing and thats when I first discovered Swan Lake:

So I decided to go back and see where this beautiful story started...

The original idea for the ballet came from a story called  Johann Karl August Musäus, "Der geraubte Schleier" (The Stolen Veilas well as another folk-tale called'The White Duck'. Although not stated as a fact they have similar storylines so rumour has it that composer  Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky drew his influences for his now world renowned ballet from them in 1875/6.

I then looked at modern interpretations of Swan Lake such as Matthew Bourne's version and of course the film The Black Swan

I got the inspiration for the hair from this promotional poster for the black swan:

I thought how amazing would it be if I could create a swan out of the hair! It may not work for the actual performance but for the photo shoot it would be perfect!

I looked at various high fashion images which had makeup inspired by swan lake/the black swan:

Japanese Vogue

Fashion editorial by Ana Martinez, hair & makeup by Eva Sanvivas, photographer: Mara Saiz.

Black Swan inspired makeup at the Jean Louis Sabaji for his spring summer 2015 collection.

Editorial for Vogue

I love all of these images but think that the last one is my absolute favourite its so striking.

After researching I finally came up with my final design!
